PREPARE YOUR HEART FOR THE SERMON BY LOOKING THROUGH THESE SUGGESTIONS THAT WILL ASSIST YOU IN MAKING THE MOST OF OUR TIME TOGETHER HEARING GOD'S WORD.

You will find suggestions for thinking more critically through the passage, meditating more intently on the text, and prayerfully seeking wisdom to deepen your understanding of the passage to be preached this Sunday.

Carefully Think

  • Who struck down the firstborn in Egypt?
  • Which of the firstborn of Egypt died according to verses 29-30?
  • Who does Pharaoh tell Moses and Aaron to go away from?
  • Why does Pharaoh mention flocks and herds in verse 32?
  • Why were the Egyptians urgent to send the Israelites away? What made them favorable towards Israel?
  • What word is used to describe how the Israelites took the Egyptians’ possessions in verse 36? What word is used to describe the Israelites in verses 41 and 51? What type of language is Moses using here?
  • Read Genesis 15:12-16. How does this connect to Exodus 12?
  • Who can partake in the Passover? Who can’t?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • How does God show Himself as the Redeemer of Life in this chapter?
  • How have the events of this chapter been foreshadowed throughout Exodus 1-11? (For instance, look back at Exodus 3:21-22) What does this tell you about God’s sovereign providence?
  • Did the firstborn in Egypt deserve to die? What have you learned about God and humanity through the ten plagues?
  • Why was it so important to know who could and could not take the Passover? Are there any parallels to this in our union with Christ in the New Covenant?
  • Consider looking up other passages throughout the Old Testament to see where and why the Israelites were to remember the Exodus. Why is the Exodus so important to Israel’s history? Why is it important to the Bible’s story? How does it connect to Christ in the New Testament?
  • What emotions can you see in this chapter? What emotional response does Moses want his readers to have when they remember this story?
