Evangelistic Encounters in Scripture

Prepare your heart for the Sermon by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together hearing God's Word.

You will find suggestions for thinking more critically through the passage, meditating more intently on the text, and prayerfully seeking wisdom to deepen your understanding of the passage to be preached this Sunday.

Carefully Think

  • Read Mark 10:17-22. What does the man’s initial approach and question in v. 17 reveal? How is the man described? Is this a good question? Is this a good way to address Jesus?
  • What does Jesus’ response in v. 18 reveal?
  • Why does Jesus bring up commandments in v. 19? Thinking about the 10 commandments, what are these commandments about? What are the other 5 commandments?
  • What does the man’s response in v. 20 reveal?
  • How does Jesus respond in v. 21? What is Jesus requiring of this man in v. 21?
  • How did the man respond to Jesus in v. 22? What explanation is given for this response in v. 22? What does Jesus do as the man walks away?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • What would you say/think about the man’s approach and question in v. 17? How would you respond if someone asked you this question?
  • What is Jesus saying about goodness in v. 18? What is Jesus doing by bringing up the commandments?
  • Is the man lying in 20? Does Jesus say he is?
  • How is Jesus’ love instructive for us? How is Jesus’ instruction in v. 21 instructive for us?
  • Consider the man’s ultimate response. How does this reveal his heart? Consider Jesus’ response to this rejection. How is that instructive for us?
