The Book of Hebrews square

Prepare your heart for the Sermon by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together hearing God's Word.

You will find suggestions for thinking more critically through the passage, meditating more intently on the text, and prayerfully seeking wisdom to deepen your understanding of the passage to be preached this Sunday.

Carefully Think

  • Read Hebrews 6:9-12. How does the author’s tone and address seem to change from vv. 1-8 to vv. 9-12? What do you think explains this change? Who is he addressing? How does this help us understand the audience and point of both sections?
  • What attribute of God does the author root the conviction of v. 9 in? What would it be unjust for God to forget? How do their work and love demonstrate vv. 7-8?
  • What does the author want from his readers in v. 11? How is this related to vv. 9-10?
  • What negative and positive purpose for their diligence do you see in v. 12? Who might the author be referring to in v. 12? (See vv. 13-15)

Prayerfully Meditate

  • What are the implications of vv. 1-8 given the audience described in v. 9?
  • How does the author describe the love of his readers in v. 10? Toward whom/what is their love directed? How was their love shown? How is their love still being shown?
  • Why does the author want his readers to realize their “full assurance of hope”? How does this go against ordinary human thinking/inclination?
