The Book of Hebrews square

Prepare your heart for the Sermon by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together hearing God's Word.

You will find suggestions for thinking more critically through the passage, meditating more intently on the text, and prayerfully seeking wisdom to deepen your understanding of the passage to be preached this Sunday.

Carefully Think

  • Read Hebrews 12:25-29
  • What are the readers supposed to “see to”?
  • Who is the Him in verse 25?
  • What does it mean to refuse Him?
  • What are the readers escaping or not escaping?
  • What does turn away mean in this context? How is that similar or different from refusing Him?
  • Where is the quote in verse 26 from?
  • What is the context of this quoted passage? Why is this quoted?
  • What is the promise in verse 26?
  • Does once more refer to a previous time when the earth was shaken? If yes, when was that?
  • Why does it say that things will be shaken once more?
  • What are the things that cannot be shaken?
  • How is it that these unshaken things remain?
  • Who is the we in verse 28 referring to?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • Read Hebrews 12:25-29
  • Why is it worse for these readers if they turn away as compared to those of the past who refused to follow God?
  • How do believers get a kingdom? What is this kingdom?
  • How does an unshakable kingdom produce gratitude?
  • How does the reality of an impending destruction of the “shakable,” temporary things of this world affect the way you should live today?
  • According to verse 28 what does this gratitude accomplish?
  • What does this acceptable service look like?
  • What are reverence and awe and how do they relate to gratitude and service?
  • How is God described in verse 29? What does that mean?
  • How does this description of God lead to gratitude?
  • How is a God who can be described this way also be described as good?
