1 Thessalonians square

Prepare your heart for the Sermon by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together hearing God's Word.

You will find suggestions for thinking more critically through the passage, meditating more intently on the text, and prayerfully seeking wisdom to deepen your understanding of the passage to be preached this Sunday.

Carefully Think

  • Read 1 Thessalonians 5:14.  How does the author refer to the original recipients of this letter?
  • How would you define “admonish”?  What behaviors or attitudes would characterize the “unruly”?
  • What contrasts are present in this verse?  What similarities?
  • How would you describe “fainthearted” or “weak”?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • Which category of people in this verse would characterize you and why?
  • Describe a time when you’ve been admonished by another believer.  How did you respond and what was your attitude toward that believer?
  • How have you been encouraged or shown patience by another believer?  How did that impact your faith?
  • How could our culture’s emphasis on individuality effect the application of this verse?
