Carefully Think

  • Read Matthew 12:15-21.
  • Summarize the main point of this passage in one sentence. How does it related to his struggles with the Pharisees in the preceding sections (12:1-14)?
  • What are the differences between the character of the Pharisees as seen in 12:1-14 and Jesus, as described in this passage (12:15-21)?
  • Why would Jesus not want the crowds to make him known? What does the quotation from Isaiah 42:1-4 suggest is the answer to this question?
  • Why didn't Jesus demonstrate the full authority of his Lordship and preserve himself against the Pharisees in a way that would end their influence?
  • List the characteristics about Jesus you learn from the Isaiah quotation.
  • What is the ultimate purpose of Jesus' earthly ministry? Had it been completed up to this point in Matthew's account?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • As you consider Christ during the Christmas season, how does this passage help shape the way you should see and value the earthly ministry of Jesus?
  • How does this description of Jesus compare with what Jesus said of himself in 11:29-30?
  • Jesus was focused on completing the mission the Father had for him, in the way the Father wanted him to complete it. What can we learn from Jesus in this and how should it affect our patience, kindness, humility, and focus in ministry to others?

Intentionally Act

  • Use this passage in a family devotional time around Christmas to talk about the ultimate mission of Jesus. How much of your holiday celebration is focused on the mission of Jesus?
  • Ask Jesus to instill in you the same qualities of patience, humility, and kindness in serving others. What, in ministry to others, has you tempted to act in opposite ways?
  • Pray for non-Christians who will attend this Sunday that they will have a clear picture of the person and purpose of Jesus and his ministry. Pray that the Spirit will use it to convince them of their need for salvation.
  • Pray for believers to be encouraged and equipped in God's word this Sunday. Pray we will have a renewed focus on the Savior and celebrate him with refreshed hearts this Christmas.
  • Pray for those who will be leading the service this Sunday: Sam Karl, and Dawson Bryant, music; Mark Krystyniak, Elders' prayer and Scripture reading; Bret Capranica, teaching.
  • Listen to and meditate on the songs we will sing this Sunday and Christmas Eve. Prepare your heart to worship in song with insight and zeal.
