Elder's Prayer

Please find below the notes from the Elder's Prayer this past Sunday.

I’ve adapted my prayer this morning from Grace Baptist Fellowship. I’m going to underscore some ways in which we might struggle in our humanity contrasted with how God reveals himself in scripture. My hope is that it will cause our hearts to marvel at the sufficiency of God, especially in light of our needs, while also reminding us that God alone is worthy of worship.

Let’s Pray

Father God, We are guilty of many sins, but…
You, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you. Thank you Father for giving ear to our prayers and being merciful (Psalm 86:5)

We are prone to seek joy in wrong places and through earthly endeavors, but…
You make known to us the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:11)

We are beleaguered, distracted, and frustrated by many troubles and many trials, but…
You are a hiding place; you preserve us from trouble (Psalm 32:7); You are with us; you guide us in the paths of righteousness, your rod and your staff, they comfort us. (Psalm 23:3-4)

We are predisposed to getting ourselves in seemingly impossible situations and broken relationships, but…
You are the God who works wonders… (Psalm 77:14); You are great and do wondrous things… (Psalm 86:10); You, O Lord, are our hope… (Psalm 71:5)

We can feel isolated, lonely, and deserted in this world, but…
You are our Father, our God, and the Rock of our salvation. (Psalm 89:26); You alone are our help and our deliverer… (Psalm 40:17)

We are quick to lose hope, become discouraged and fail to persevere, but…
You, O LORD, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. (Psalm 97:9); You are good and do good… (Psalm 119:68); You are righteous, O LORD… (Psalm 119:137); You are our God… (Psalm 118:28)

Therefore, O God and Father; Help us to seek you earnestly; our soul thirsts for you; our flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1); Teach us to do your will, for you are our God! (Psalm 143:10)

Make us aware of our needs. Crush our pride and foolish thinking. Remind us of your faithfulness. Help us to be settled by your steadfast love. Cause us to trust you more, depend on you more, rest in you more, glory in you more, enjoy you more, honor you more and call upon you more. You deserve all glory and praise. You are our good shepherd. I pray we find comfort in this truth.
