Preparing 20161120 post

Prepare your heart for the Sermon by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together hearing God's Word.

You will find suggestions for thinking more critically through the passage, meditating more intently on the text, and prayerfully seeking wisdom to deepen your understanding of the passage to be preached this Sunday.

Carefully Think

  • Read 1 Cor 9:24-10:5. How is 9:24-27 immediately connected to 10:1-5? How does this passage continue in the theme of idolatry of the larger section (Ch. 9-11)?
  • Paul repeatedly references events that happened in the Exodus. What are the specific events that he is referencing? (Look in Exodus 14, 16, 17, Numbers 14) Why do you think he references those events? (Look down to v.6)
  • What does Paul mean that the people of Israel were "baptized into Moses"? Why does he say the food they ate and what they drank were "spiritual"? What does Paul mean that Christ was a spiritual rock who followed them? Where from this text are you getting the answers to your questions?
  • What was the outcome of the people of Israel’s experiences in the wilderness? How does this relate to what Paul was talking about in 9:24-27? How does it connect 9:24-27 with 10:6-13?
  • The Sermon Study equipping class notes are available online for anyone wanting to dig deeper. Please review this week's notes to help study this passage. Click here for the notes.

Prayerfully Meditate

  • What is the main point that Paul is trying to make in this passage? How do v. 1 and v. 5 help you see the main point?
  • How does this passage serve as a warning against participation in spiritual activity that isn’t pleasing to the Lord? What was it about Israel’s participation in spiritual things that wasn’t pleasing to the Lord? (See v. 6)
  • Is your spiritual activity pleasing to the Lord? How do you know? What distinguishes your spiritual activity from that of Israel’s in the wilderness? Look back on 1 Cor 9:24-27 to Paul’s example. How does his example help you know what true spiritual growth and living looks like?
