This weekend is Grounded Student Ministries annual DNOW weekend. This is a weekend of biblical exposition, small group discipleship, service, and relationship building. Rick Holland is going to be preaching for DNOW, which means he will also be preaching on Sunday morning. We’ll be looking at various passages throughout the weekend that are specifically directed at having a biblical worldview. On Sunday morning we’ll be in Romans 5:3-5 looking at how a believer should approach difficulties with a biblical worldview.

Rick HollandRick was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee and became a Christian in High School. He served as a youth pastor in Georgia, Michigan, and California and spent 25 years at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California. While at Grace he pastored Crossroads, the college and singles ministry, and served as the Executive Pastor under Dr. John MacArthur.

Rick is the author of Uneclipsing the Son (Kress Biblical Resources, 2011) and has contributed chapters in other books as well as articles in theological journals. He serves on the faculty of The Expositor’s Seminary where he teaches Homiletics and Expository Preaching. He has earned degrees from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (BS), The Master's Seminary (MDiv), The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (DMin), and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (PhD candidate).

Rick has served as Senior Pastor of Mission Road Bible Church since August of 2011. He and his wife, Kim, have three sons: Luke, John, and Mark.

Please see the Preparing for the Sermon post for suggestions in thinking more critically through the passage, meditating more intently on the text, and prayerfully seeking wisdom to deepen your understanding of the passage to be preached this Sunday.

Intentionally Act

  • Think of some individuals in our church that you know could be encouraged by the truth of this passage. Seek to lovingly encourage them with what you’ve gleaned from this brief study.
  • Pray that as a church we would have a right view of suffering. That we wouldn’t view suffering as something to get away from but something to persevere through with a right perspective so that we are conformed to the image of Christ by the work of the Spirit through the Word in that suffering.
  • Pray for those leading our corporate gathering this week and for the Holy Spirit’s work as the Word of God is further explained and applied: Dawson Bryant: music; Bret Capranica: Elders' prayer & scripture reading; Rick Holland: teaching.
