Critically Think

• Read Proverbs 4:20-23. How does Solomon preface his instruction, starting in verse 20? How does this inform our understanding of verse 23?
• Why does Solomon warn his son to watch over his heart? How emphatically is he to watch it?
• Read Matthew 6:19-21. Where does Jesus say our hearts are? What command does Jesus give in light of this truth according to verse 19-20?
• Read Mark 7:14-23. What must be touched for defilement to take place according to verses 19 and 21? From where does Jesus say that defilement comes? How does he describe defilement in verses 21-23?
• Read Romans 1:18-32. Why is humanity’s heart darkened according to verses 21, 25, and 28a? What is God’s response in verse 24, 26, and 26b?
• Read Deuteronomy 6:4-9. What is man’s whole heart to be given to according to verse 5? What is to always be on man’s heart according to verse 6?

Prayerfully Meditate

• How does Solomon’s command in Proverbs 4:23 shape our understanding of the relationship between our heart and our life?
• How does Jesus’s command in Matthew 6:19-21 shape our understanding of the relationship between our treasure and our heart?
• According to Mark 7:14-23, where does evil comes from? Why does this answer matter so much? What would changing this answer mean?
• According to Romans 1:18-31, who is responsible for our hearts being the way they are—us, or God?
• If Jesus calls Deuteronomy 6:5 the greatest commandment, then what does this say about the role and responsibility of the heart in one’s relationship with God?

Intentionally Act

• How do you guard your heart? How could you guard it “with all diligence” this week?
• How does Scripture’s testimony of your heart point to your need for Christ and the praise due to Christ? Consider how to pray in light of these truths this week.
• Deuteronomy 6:5 says to love God with ALL your heart. In what areas of your heart do you struggle to obey this command the most? Since God expects His commands to be obeyed, how can you love the Lord with ALL your heart’s affections, thoughts, and actions? What is a step in this wholehearted obedience that you can take this week?
