You will find tangible suggestions for putting scripture to action in your personal life and in our corporate body, links to the songs we will sing, and lyrics for you to prepare for our corporate singing.

Special Instructions: There will be several passages addressed in the sermon this week. A handful of these texts will be explored in the questions below. Feel free to work through all the questions related to the same passage scattered throughout the post instead of taking them one section at a time.

Critically Think

• Read Romans 2:11-16. According to this passage, what does the conscience do?
• Who has a conscience according to this passage?
• Read 1 Corinthians 4:3-5. When should judgement be passed based on this passage?
• Who examines the inner man? What kinds of things are examined according to this text?
• What are the results of this examination in the end? What is the source of these results?
• Read 1 Corinthians 8. What is the specific issue Paul is addressing in this passage?
• What does Paul mean when he describes someone having a “weak conscience?”
• Read 1 Corinthians 10 with specific focus on verses 23-33. Does Paul say that the believers in Corinth should or should not eat food sacrificed to idols in this passage? Is this the same or different from chapter 8?
• Read 1 Tiomthy 1:3-7, 18-20; 4:1-3. What was the error in Ephesus that was leading to trouble in the church? How did the conscience factor in to this error?
• What was Paul’s goal in this passage?
• According to Hebrews 9:6-14 and 10:18-22, how is the conscience cleansed?
• According to 1 Peter 3:18-22, what is the source of a good conscience?

Prayerfully Meditate

• Read Romans 2:11-16 again. Explain how the reality of the conscience in human beings relates to the idea expressed in verse 11. How might this impact your view of God?
• Keep a finger on Romans 2:15-16 while reading 1 Corinthians 4:3-5. Compare and contrast Romans 2:15-16 with 1 Corinthians 4:5.
• According to 1 Corinthians 8, does the conscience of every believer find alignment with each other? Why or why not? What are the implications of difference in convictions from the consciences between believers?
• Now read 1 Corinthians 10 with specific attention given to verses 23-33. List out the ways this passage is directly addressing the individual and their own heart. Also list out the ways this passage directly addresses the ways we relate to our neighbors.
• Considering 1 Timothy 1:3-7, 18-20 and 1 Timothy 4:1-3 describe the relationship between faith and the conscience.
• How has your understanding of the conscience been deepened by these passages? Write out a summary of what the conscience is and how it functions in the life of a believer

Intentionally Act

• Considering these passages, how can you seek to strengthen and pursue sanctification of your own conscience to align it to the truth of scripture?
• How can these texts help you care for others who may differ in their convictions from you?
• What would it look like to pursue unity in the body of Christ considering differences of conscience?
• What hard conversations are you avoiding in discipleship in the body of Christ because of differences in the conscience? What would it look like to pursue robust and holistic discipleship in these areas speaking truth in love?
• Where might your own conscience be weak and in need of correction? Pray for the Lord to guide you in truth.
