Prepare your heart for our Sunday Morning Gathering by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together.
You will find tangible suggestions for putting scripture to action in your personal life and in our corporate body, links to the songs we will sing, and lyrics for you to prepare for our corporate singing.
Critically Think
- Read John 4 & 5 for context for this week's passage.
- Which people are demonstrating faith? How does this impact what they impact about who Jesus is?
- Read John 5:37-47 for this week's passage. Focus on the mention of Scripture in these verses.
- What is the correlation Jesus gives between belief and having the Word in you?
- What is Jesus referring to regarding "eternal life" when he says, "You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life"?
- What does Jesus say that clarifies what they should be searching for?
- In verses 41-44, what does Jesus clarify they are seeking? What else should they be seeking according to Jesus?
- What is Jesus referring to when he says, "the one who accuses you is Moses"? In what writings does Moses write about Jesus? -- Think of some specific examples.
- What is the connection that Jesus makes between the Old Testament and Jesus' words in verse 47?
Prayerfully Meditate
- How does this passage help us to understand the importance of the Old Testament as compared to the New Testament? Are we able to understand the New without the Old?
- What is Jesus' expectation of the Jews understanding of Scripture? Is there a meaning He was not expecting them to have known? Is there an accountability to their not understanding rightly the Old Testament scriptures?
- Think through the messages in the elder sermon series this year on the Scriptures. Is the Bible the "source" of our salvation? What is the Bible intended for?
- How important is it that we "study" the Scriptures with the right method? What if we "study" or search the Scriptures diligently for what we want to find? What is the difference?
Intentionally Act
- Continually pray that God would reveal our "presuppositions" as we approach the text. Meditate on what you look for when you read Scripture.
- Take time daily this week to examine your faith, how do you operate in your day to day activities according to faith? Can your faith be seen in what you do by you? Can your faith be seen by others? How can you alter your ways to walk by faith and not by sight?
- How can you shape your discipleship around God's Word? Is your discipleship more "fellowship" without partnering in the Gospel and seeking, savoring, and sharing Christ?
- Click the links below to find the lyrics and recordings of the songs planned for our gathering this Sunday; learn the songs, study the lyrics and sing them with others.
- Pray for those leading our corporate gathering this week and for the Holy Spirit’s work as the Word of God is further explained and applied: Dawson Bryant: music; Ben Gardner: elder prayer & scripture reading; Brett Harris: teaching.
