Sermon Text for Sunday: Revelation 7:1-8
Critically Think
- Read Rev 7:1-8.
- After what event is John referring to in verse 1? (read Ch 6:12-17) What question is asked at the end of verse 17 that leads into Ch 7?
- Describe the contrast between God’s actions in Chapters 6 and 8 with God’s actions in Chapter 7?
- How many angels did he see? Where were they located? Why is this?
- What are they holding back? What do they symbolize? Look up Jeremiah 49:36; Ezekiel 37:9; Daniel 7:2, Zechariah 2:6 to see other uses of this phrase and their context.
- What did the angel from the east have in his possession? Who else has this seal? (John 6:27)
- Do you see a parallel between the sealing here and the mark put upon the faithful in Ezekiel 9:1-11?
- How many of those are sealed? How many tribes and how many from each tribe?
Prayerfully Meditate
- What power or authority did the four angels possess?
- What needed to happen before the angels could perform this action?
- What is the significance of the sealing? Why is it on the forehead?
- What command did the angel from the east give to the four angels? Why?
- Who are the 144,000? Support your answer with Scripture.
- What does the act of sealing these individuals accomplish?
Intentionally Act
- No matter who we understand those who are sealed in Rev. 7:1-8 to be, what do these verses teach us most importantly about God?
- How should these verses shape your thinking, believing, and living? In what ways should these verses shape your interactions with unbelieving friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc.?
- What should our response be as believers to the protection that God has placed on us?
- Why should our secure position in Christ lead us to steadfast perseverance and even risking much for the gospel?
- How do the themes of divine protection and salvation provide you with hope in today's troubled world?
