Sermon Text for Sunday: Revelation 6:12-17
Critically Think
- Read Revelation 6:12-17. Read the context again from 6:1-17. What is the focus of the judgments in these seals being opened? Who is the one executing this judgment?
- List all of the objects of creation that are impacted when the sixth seal is opened. Do these appear to be literal or figurative?
- Why are the stars falling compared to a fig tree? How does this help us understand this verse correctly?
- How many people groups are in verse 15? Could this be significant?
- Why would these people plead with the mountains that are “being moved out of their places” in verse 14 to fall on them? What state of mind are these people in? Would their response be "belief" or "unbelief"?
Prayerfully Meditate
- Examine Matthew 24 and look for similarities to this seal in regard to impacts on the earth.
- Who are these people that know they are hiding from “him who sits on the throne” and “from the wrath of the Lamb?” How would these people know these things?
- What does it mean “who is able to stand” in verse 17? Read Joel 2:11, Nahum 1:6, and Malachi 3:2 and the verses immediately surrounding them. What is the theme of all of the passages?
- What do we think of when the "sky is being rolled up"? Read Revelation 20:11 and 21:1 and compare it to Revelation 6:14 with the reference to the sky being rolled up. What are the differences in this passage?
Intentionally Act
- Thinking through prior sermons and the understanding that the church has been taken up already, what should our response be to these events?
- How should we pray through the text of the sixth seal of judgment?
- How are we responding to current events in light of understanding the coming judgment? Is there an area we need to repent?
- How are we responding in light of this seal to those who are unbelievers? Neighbors? Co-workers? Children in our home? Government authorities?
- What ways should we respond in urgency to the coming seals of judgment in regards to our daily lives? Church-planting? Discipleship? Evangelism?
