Carefully Think

  • Read Matthew Matthew 19:23-30
  • How does this passage relate to the passage preached last week (19:16-22), and even with the rest of Matthew 19?
  • According to Jesus, how difficult is it for a wealthy person to have eternal life? In light of what happened with the Rich Young Ruler, why is it so difficult?
  • Why does Jesus use the illustration of a camel trying to go through the eye of a needle?
  • What is Jesus referring to in verse 26 as being "impossible with man" but possible with God?
  • What does Jesus promise that the 12 Apostles will receive for forsaking all to follow Christ? When will it happen?
  • What does Jesus promise to any and all who forsake all to follow Christ?
  • Why does Jesus list what he does in verse 29 as what it looks like to follow Christ?
  • In light of the wealthy promises to the apostles and greater number of disciples, why does Jesus say what he does in verse 30?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • Why is wealth so problematic in people becoming followers of Christ? How could poverty be problematic in following Jesus?
  • In light of this passage and what it teaches about following Jesus, how would you describe what it means for anyone to treasure Jesus? How would you describe the way you treasure Jesus? How is it visible in your life?
  • How often does the promise of future reward impact your joy in and loyalty to Christ now?
  • How would this passage impact the way you share the gospel with non-Christians? How you pray for them?

Intentionally Act

  • How would this passage encourage you to respond in gratitude and faith to God for the evidence of salvation you see in your own life? Spend time praying specific prayers of gratitude for God's work of grace in you.
  • Is there any attraction in your life that tends to distract you from loyalty to Christ? What does this passage suggest you confess and turn from?
  • Who could you encourage this week with what you find in this passage? Take opportunity this week to speak with them.
  • How would this passage encourage you to pray for our congregation, our collective testimony in our city and neighborhoods?
  • Pray for those who will be leading the service this week: Dawson Bryant, music; Brandon Ferguson, Elders' Prayer and Scripture Reading; Bret Capranica, teaching.
  • Listen to the music we will sing this week and prepare yourself to sing with understanding and zeal when we gather on the Lord's Day. Use the lyrics to meditate on the message of each song.
