Sermon Text for Sunday: Luke 24:1-53
Critically Think
- Read Luke 24:1-53
- Who came to the tomb? Why were they going there? What was found when they arrived?
- Who appears to these women? What did they command the women to “remember?”
- What was their response to this message? Who did they tell?
- How did the men who heard this message from the ladies respond? Whose response is uniquely singled out from this group of men?
- Who is walking on the road to Emmaus according to verse 13-14? Who joins them?
- Did the two men walking recognize the one who joined? Why/why not?
- What did Jesus ask them? How would you describe the response of the two to Jesus’ question?
- Is this expectation of understanding the sufferings of Christ limited to some of the prophets? How do you know? Is this limited to only the prophets? Consider vs 6-7 and 44-45 also.
- How does Jesus reveal himself to the disciples? What does He say when He does so? What is the response of the disciples?
- How does Jesus respond to the disciple’s fear and doubts?
- What eventually happens that leads to the disciples understanding the scriptures? How do they get understanding?
- What does Jesus promise to His disciples near the end of this passage? How did Jesus leave them? Where did He go?
Prayerfully Meditate
- What passages in scripture can you point to -especially in Luke’s gospel – which the angels may be referring to in Luke 24:6-7? Where did Jesus speak of this in his ministry? List the passages and describe the context surrounding them.
- Notice the description the disciples give of Jesus in verse 19-21. List the aspects of this description.
- Consider what is left out of their description of Jesus as well. What was the error in their understanding of Jesus? What did they get wrong?
- Read Isaiah 53:3-11. How does this prophecy anticipate the sufferings of Christ? List the aspects of Christ’s suffering and their significance as described in Isaiah 53.
- Consider where the writings of Moses predict the sufferings of Christ. List some passages that come to mind. Justify any passages that you list. Read Genesis 3:15 and Exodus 12:5, 13. How might passages like these point to sufferings of Christ as anticipated by Moses?
- Read Jonah 1:15-17 and Matthew 12:38-41. What do these passages reveal about the Old Testament’s prediction of the Christ in the prophets?
- Where do the sufferings of Christ get predicted in the Psalms? Justify any passages you list. Read Psalm 22:16-18. How does Psalm 22 anticipate the sufferings of Christ? Was David a prophet? Consider Acts 2:29-30.
- Theologically speaking, why was it necessary for Christ to suffer?
