The Gospel According to John Sermon Image
Prepare your heart for our Sunday Morning Gathering by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together.

You will find tangible suggestions for putting scripture to action in your personal life and in our corporate body, links to the songs we will sing, and lyrics for you to prepare for our corporate singing.

Critically Think

  • Take some time to review John 1-2:17. Make an outline of the events that have taken place so far in the gospel of John. What was the first sign Jesus preformed that John records?
  • Read John 2:13-17. What has just taken place before this exchange between Jesus and the Jews and what was its significance in showing us who Jesus is?
  • What do the Jews demand to see from Jesus and what will this prove?
  • How does Jesus answer the demand of the Jews?
  • How did the Jews take this statement out of context later in Jesus’s ministry? (Matthew 26:61, 27:40, and Acts 6:14)
  • What was Jesus actually referencing when he said destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up?
  • What was the response of the disciples on remembering this statement by Jesus when He was raised from the dead?
  • Why did many believe in Jesus’s name during this time?
  • Why did Jesus not entrust himself to the many that were believing in him?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • When John makes the statement, “they believed the scripture.” What body of writing is he referencing? (Luke 24:25-27)
  • Are Jesus’s words being placed on the same level as scripture by John when he states that the disciples believed scripture and Jesus’s words?
  • Think about vs. 22 from the authors perspective as he writes after the resurrection of Jesus. What things about Jesus is John convinced of?
  • Look up these times the Jews demanded to see signs from Jesus (Matthew 12:38-42, Matthew 16:1-4 and Luke 11:29-32). What consistent theme do you see?
  • How does the end of vs. 24 and vs. 25 show the deity of Christ?

Intentionally Act

  • Consider the contrast between the belief of the disciples after the resurrection and the profession of belief by the crowds in this passage. Examine your own faith. Do you believe the words of scripture and of Jesus that are validated by the resurrection or do you follow Jesus for the show or what you can personally gain?
  • When considering the work of Christ how prominent is the resurrection? When you share the gospel do you highlight the resurrection or do you leave Jesus in the tomb?
  • Summarize this passage in 21 words or less.
