Critically Think

  • Read Exodus 20 and then 20:7-11.
  • How do verses 7 and 8-11 relate to verses 3-6 and verses 1-2?
  • What does the word "vain" mean in verse 7?
  • What, specifically, about the Lord should not be taken in vain? What is the significance of this?
  • What is the reason to not take the Lord's name in vain? How is this related to the reason of verse 5?
  • Which day is the sabbath day?
  • What is the purpose for remembering the sabbath day in verse 8?
  • What is the reason God blessed the sabbath and made in holy in verse 11?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • What does it mean to take the Lord's name in vain? Does this command still have application for the church? If so, what?
  • How did Israel break the commandment to not take the Lord's name in vain? Can you think of any passages?
  • How did Israel break the commandment to remember the sabbath day? Can you think of any passages?
  • What did Jesus say about the sabbath day (see Mark 2:23-3:6)? What did Paul say (see Colossians 2:16-17)? What did the author of Hebrews say (see Hebrews 4:1-11) How do these passages shape our understanding of the sabbath under the New Covenant of Christ?
  • What do these two commandments reveal about what it means to love God and bear His image?

Intentionally Act

  • After thinking of what it means to take the Lord's name in vain, do you need to repent of treating God lightly? What would it look like to revere Him and His name this week?
  • How can you rest in the finished work of Christ this week and remember the work He has done?
  • Do you see your obedience to God's Word as the only acceptable expression of your love Him? Is your loving obedience rooted in a response to God's love for you in Christ? Pray that the Lord would continually sanctify you in this way.
