Prepare your heart for our Sunday Morning Gathering by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together.

You will find tangible suggestions for putting scripture to action in your personal life and in our corporate body, links to the songs we will sing, and lyrics for you to prepare for our corporate singing.

Critically Think

  • Read Exodus 20 in context for review. Read and observe carefully verses 12-17 for this Sunday.
  • Is there a transition from verses 1-11 into verse 12? If so, what is the transition? What remains consistent in verses 1-11 and 12-17?
  • What does it mean to "honor" your father and mother? Can you come up with an answer from Scripture that comes prior to this text?
  • Verse 12 gives a "that" explanation for honoring your father and mother. Does any other commandment have an explanation clause?
  • Is verse 13 a new command to not murder? Was murder permissible before? If not, when was the first account of murder that God dealt judiciously with?
  • In regard to adultery, when was this principle initiated in Scripture?
  • What is the difference between "stealing" and "coveting"?
  • Is "bearing false witness against your neighbor" the same as lying in general?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • What makes it unique that God would include both "father and mother" in the culture at the time Moses is given this from Yahweh?
  • Why would God need to give "do not commit adultery" as a command to Israel as they "image God to the surrounding nations"? What is marriage intended to display to the world according to Scripture?
  • What is at the heart of "stealing" and "coveting"? How does this go against the first commands up through verse 11?
  • How do these commandments align with the two greatest commandments that Jesus states sum up all the law and the prophets in Matthew 22:36-40?

Intentionally Act

  • How do you think through your actions displaying God's image and taking on His name when it deals with other people?
  • What motivates your interactions with other people in the world, from our closest neighbor to our furthest?
  • How does the world know we "take the name of Christ" as the church according to John 13:35?
  • Pray for God to show you discontent thoughts that tempt you to sin and take Christ Jesus name in vain. Psalm 139:23-24
