Prepare your heart for our Sunday Morning Gathering by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together.

You will find tangible suggestions for putting scripture to action in your personal life and in our corporate body, links to the songs we will sing, and lyrics for you to prepare for our corporate singing.

Critically Think

  • Who is Jethro, and where was the last time we saw him in Exodus?
  • What is the focus of what Jethro has been hearing about in verse 1?
  • What is the focus of what Moses tells Jethro in verse 8?
  • What is the focus of Jethro's joy in verses 9-10?
  • What was Jethro's key realization in verse 11, and how has this been shown throughout the book of Exodus?
  • What is Jethro's main problem with what Moses is doing in verse 18?
  • What characteristics for leaders does Jethro advise in verse 21?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • Even though God does not speak in this chapter, He is clearly in focus. What does this say about how our words and conversations direct our attention and build our faith?
  • How is God portrayed in verses 1-12? How is Moses portrayed in verses 13-27? What contrast is being made, and how is this contrast still seen today?
  • How does Jethro's suggestion to Moses exhibit wisdom in giving advice to others (consider his reasons, goals, explanation, and manner)?
  • What does Moses's response to Jethro's advice say about his heart towards Jethro, himself, God, and the people? How should this guide us in our response to wise advice from others?

Intentionally Act

  • God's faithfulness to His people is meant to display His glory. How has God been at work in your life, and have you praised Him for it?
  • How can the conversations you have this week with family, friends, coworkers, etc. share the greatness of God in His current work in your life? Who could you talk to, and what are some specific examples you could share with them?
  • In what ways are you prone to pride and self-dependence? Who do you have in your life to come alongside you and help you in the work God has given you (in your sanctification, in your home, etc.)? How do you respond to the advice of others, and do you need to humbly accept any advice that has already been given?
