Prepare your heart for our Sunday Morning Gathering by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together.

You will find tangible suggestions for putting scripture to action in your personal life and in our corporate body, links to the songs we will sing, and lyrics for you to prepare for our corporate singing.

Critically Think

  • Review your notes from the Exodus Sermon Series and/or skim through the first 16 chapters of Exodus. Describe in a bullet point list what major events have transpired in the book of Exodus so far.
  • Is this the first time the people have quarreled with Moses? What other occurrences of quarreling and complaining between Moses and the Israelites are described in the book of Exodus? Why are they quarreling this time? (See Exodus 15:24 and 16:1-8)
  • How does Moses respond to the people?
  • How does God respond to Moses?
  • Who came to fight against Israel? Why?
  • What caused Israel to be successful in battle? Does this speak to a physical reality that led to their success or a divine influence? Explain.

Prayerfully Meditate

  • Consider the use of the word “test” in verse 2 and 7. How might this relate to the use of the same word in Exodus 15:25 and 16:4.
  • Compare and contrast the account about water in Exodus 15 with the account in Exodus 17. How are they similar? In what ways are they different?
  • What is the significance of the Amalek and the Amalekites in the Bible? What is their lineage? How does it fit into the story of the Bible?
  • Notice that Joshua is under the tutelage of Moses in this passage. How long does Joshua serve under Moses before he leads Israel? How might this inform how we think through training for spiritual leadership? What principes can we draw out from this dynamic in the story of Joshua?
  • What is the significance of a book of memorial? Why was Israel being asked to remember historical events like this among others?
  • What is the meaning behind the name of God found in verse 15, “The LORD is My Banner?”

Intentionally Act

  • Consider when you are most prone to complain. What beliefs are exposed in your heart toward God when you complain? Dissect your heart to find the roots of these sinful desires and repent with faith.
  • What are truths about God that you are prone to forget? What are you doing to rehearse these truths that you would remember?
  • What should you learn from the command to make a memorial found in this text (among many others)? Consider reflecting on 1 Peter 1:3-9 and the promises we tend to forget found in Christ.
  • Click the links below to find the lyrics and recordings of the songs planned for our gathering this Sunday; learn the songs, study the lyrics and sing them with others.
  • Pray for those leading our corporate gathering this week and for the Holy Spirit’s work as the Word of God is further explained and applied: Dawson Bryant: music; Sam Karl: elder prayer & scripture reading; Bret Capranica: teaching.
