Sermon Text for Sunday: Exodus 15

Critically Think

  • Read Exodus 15.
  • What was the response of God’s people to the deliverance he brought about in chapter 14 that we see in this chapter?
  • What does this song say about who God is? What does it say about what God does? What does it say about our response to God?
  • How does this song look forward? What does it look forward to?
  • How does v. 19 function in the chapter?
  • What are Miriam and the women repeating in vv. 20-21? Why?
  • What do the people do in vv. 22-24? How does God respond?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • What does the people’s response in vv. 1-18 tell us about how we should respond to God’s salvation?
  • Meditate on who God is and what he does according to this chapter. Consider who God is for you in Christ.
  • Meditate on the patience of God toward his people as seen in vv. 22-27.
  • Where in your heart do you see the same tendency to grumble as the people did in v. 24? How does this discontentment display itself in your life? Who are you grumbling against and discontent with? How does God’s patience encourage you in light of this?

Intentionally Act

  • How should your thinking about who God is and what God does be shaped by this chapter?
  • How should your singing this Sunday be impacted by this chapter?
  • How should you address discontentment in light of the end of the chapter? What other passages of Scripture address contentment? How can you combat discontentment and seek to be content biblically?
