Sermon Text for Sunday: Exodus 14
Critically Think
- Read Exodus 13:17-22. Why was Israel still in the wilderness of Egypt?
- In verses 14:3-8, who is hardening Pharaoh’s heart?
- In verses 3-8, who is hardening Pharaoh’s heart?
- Who is Israel addressing in their complaint in verse 11-12? Who is God addressing in verse 15?
- A footnote in the NASB95 for verse 31 gives the word translated “power” as literally meaning “hand.” How does God’s “great hand” connect this verse to verse 30?
- What is Israel’s response to the events of chapter 14 in verse 31?
Prayerfully Meditate
- Look over chapter 14 as a whole and mark the repetitions of phrases like “hand,” “chariots and horsemen” and “fight.” Why is Moses, as the author, using so much warfare language, and how does this give greater weight to verses 13-14? What is the point Moses is making?
- Egypt’s chariots and horses were prime examples of military might and confidence in the ancient world (cf. Isaiah 31:1). Read Psalms 20 and 76. What do these psalms say about where our trust should be found, especially when compared to where the world puts its confidence in?
- What is at the heart of the complaint Israel gives to Moses (and God)?
- How is “salvation by faith alone” put on display in this chapter?
- What place does Israel’s crossing of the Red Sea have in biblical history?
- How God receives glory and honor through the death of the Egyptians and the salvation of the Israelites?
Intentionally Act
- Think back across our summer studies of Exodus up to this point and the repeated hardening of Pharaoh’s heart. How have you grown in your understanding of God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility? Considering reading Romans 9, particularly verses 15-23. As Israel finally leaves Egypt (and Pharaoh) behind, how has God been glorified in your heart and life through this study of the depravity of man and sovereign goodness of God?
- In what ways does your heart tend to react to trials or fears? Is it like Israel’s, by responding with accusations and discontentment? How does Moses’s response to not be afraid, but trust in the Lord’s salvation, still apply to your circumstances today?
- Israel responded to God’s salvation with fear and faith. How can you cultivate both of these heart attitudes in your life as you reflect on God’s salvation of His New Covenant people through Christ’s life, death, and resurrection on our behalf?
