Critically Think

• Read Romans 3:9-18.
• Read Romans 1:18-32. What argument does Paul make about Gentiles?
• Read Romans 2:1-29. What argument does Paul make about Jews?
• In Romans 3:9, who is the “we” and who is the “they”? What two groups is Paul contrasting?
• Why might the “we” in 3:9 be tempted to consider themselves better off? (Consider what has been taught previously in Romans 2 and 3).
• What conclusion does Paul reach about these two groups in 3:9?
• In 3:10-12, what descriptions are made regarding all people?
• List the kinds of activities that the people described in 3:13-18 perform.

Prayerfully Meditate

• Read Psalm 14:1-3 and 53:1-3. What are some similarities or differences between these passages in Psalms and Romans 2:9-18? Are there any phrases that are repeated in all three passages?
• What do these quotations from the Psalms tell us about human nature?
• Read the rest of Romans 3. Why does Paul want his readers to consider this description of humanity?

Intentionally Act

• Where should you find hope when considering human depravity?
• How have you seen these descriptions of human depravity played out in your own life before salvation?
• How should this understanding of human nature shape your gospel witness? How should it affect your relationships with your kids? Your coworkers? Your family?
• After studying this passage, are there any ways your thinking on human nature and human depravity need to change?
