Sermon Text for Sunday: Acts 2:42-47

Critically Think

  • Read Acts 2:42-47
  • What are the different elements of congregational worship included in this passage?
  • What is the breaking of bread referring to? Is this a general meal, the Lord’s Supper, or something else?
  • What does it mean to have everything in common?
  • How often was this group of believers meeting?
  • How soon after salvation were many of these believers participating in these elements of worship? See Acts 2:40-41.
  • What distinction might there be between the “everyone” of verse 43 and the “All the believers” of verse 44? Are these the same groups or different groups?
  • By what means is the growth of this congregation attributed?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • What distinguishes Christian fellowship from fellowship of the world? Explain. Support your answer with scripture.
  • What ways do you see unity among the believers described in this passage?
  • What emphasis is added by saying they “devoted” themselves to these elements? What is the meaning of devotion here? Compare with Acts 6:4, Romans 12:12, and Colossians 4:2.
  • How does this passage speak to the importance of hospitality among believers?
  • Would you describe yourself as devoted to teaching, Christian fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer? Why or why not?
  • What does it mean to break bread with “glad and sincere hearts?” How could this be done with sad/apathetic and insincere hearts?

Intentionally Act

  • Which elements of congregational worship are you possibly neglecting? How might you strengthen your involvement in this area?
  • When was the last time you opened your home in hospitality to other members of our church? Consider inviting some members you do not know well over for a meal and fellowship to better get to know them.
  • This passage indicates that each of the believers enjoyed the favor of all the people? Are there any people in our church with whom you neglect extending favor/grace? How can you grow in showing favor toward all the congregation?

  • Pray for those leading our corporate gathering this week and for the Holy Spirit’s work as the Word of God is further explained and applied: Dawson Bryant: music; Mark Krystyniak: elder prayer & scripture reading; Sam Karl: teaching.
