Sermon Text for Sunday: 2 Timothy 4:1-5
Critically Think
- Read 2 Timothy 4:1-5.
- Who is Paul writing too in this passage?
- What is the purpose of the words “in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom? Why did Paul include these instead of just jumping to the command?
- What are the charges listed in verse 2?
- What is the justification found in verse three-4 for the charges of verse 2?
- What are the distinct ways men will stray from truth?
- What additional charges are added on in verse 5?
- How do these charges of verse 5 contrast with the preceding verses?
Prayerfully Meditate
- Investigate each of the commands of verse 2. What do each of these words mean? How are they unique and instructive to the task of preaching?
- What do these charges indicate about the importance of preaching?
- Who is the “they” in verse 3 referring to? How do you think “they” will come to this time of drifting from truth?
- What might faithful preachers of the word have to endure as hardship?
Intentionally Act
- What value do you place on preaching? How does your life indicate it?
- How can you help elevate and maintaint the priority of preaching the truth of God’s Word as a member of your church?
- How can you protect yourself from the drift toward “wanting to have your ears tickled?”
