Elder's Prayer

Father we praise your name this Lord’s day. As a church we praise the name of Jesus and want to make much of your name. We are grateful for your persevering kindness that allows us to gather each Lord’s day as we do. Assembling together to praise you through song, through prayer, through giving and through the teaching of your word. We are mindful of our sinful rebellion, the debt we could not pay and the grace through Chist that we do not deserve. We are reminded of your gospel goodness.

On this last week of October, we are mindful too of the men who You used to spark the reformation more than 500 years ago. We are grateful to you God for their courage to stand for the truth of scripture, the supremacy of Christ, and the simplicity of the gospel.

Help us to glory in the same biblical truths they heralded. We praise you for your revealed truth in scripture. Your word alone is inspired, inerrant, infallible and all sufficient. You breathed out scripture that is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness. It does not need to be amended or bolstered by tradition. Without your word, we would be lost in a maze of human ingenuity mixed with traditions and innovations. Thank you Father that your word alone is enough.

We praise you for faith alone. The wonderful gift of belief that is completely undeserved.  We do nothing to receive the gift of faith, yet you grant us eyes to see and ears to hear.  We receive this wonderful gift through no merit of our own.

We rejoice in grace alone. Our salvation is not through works. For by grace we are saved through faith, not works. It is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. It is through the merit of Christ we can be declared righteous. Thank you Father for delivering us from the burden of legalism.

We celebrate in Christ alone. We rejoice in the Lamb of God that bore your wrath for sinners who were justifiably condemned. Christ paid our debt and remains on our side. We have one God and there is one mediator between man and God, the man Chist Jesus. We praise you because Jesus lives and makes intercession for us. I pray this church will never be distracted away from the sufficiency of Christ.

Together with the reformers we declare all glory belongs to God alone.  It is your name and your name alone that is worthy of glory. No man, no church, no institution deserves glory that is reserved for You alone. Help us resist the temptation to steal glory for ourselves that belongs to God alone. Help us live lives focused on glorifying God in all we do and enjoying You forever.

Father our hope is built on nothing less and nothing more than the blood and righteousness of your son Jesus. The gospel is our hope. Nothing more. Nothing less. The gospel is all that we need. Help us to joyfully base our lives and hope on that truth.
