Prayer of Thankfulness for God’s Grace: Adapted from Lancelot Andrewes, “Thank You for Your Gift of Grace,” in Grace from Heaven: Prayers of the Reformation, ed. Robert Elmer (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2024), 28–29.
O Lord, Our Lord, we give thanks to you for our lives over this past week since we were last met to worship you as a body.
Thank you for nurturing, protecting, guiding, comforting, and sustaining us by your Word and by your many providences.
We thank you for your gifts of grace, for the affliction and conviction of sin that have prodded our consciences, and for showing us the contrasting beauty and relief of your Gospel.
We thank you for your saving grace, for our regeneration and redemption. We thank you for calling us and recalling us, and for your patience and longsuffering to us many times up to this moment.
We praise you for the provision and success that you have granted us, and for the many, many good things that we have received at your hand. We thank you for the present blessings, for your gracious promises, and for the hope of the enjoyment of good things to come.
We thank you for family, for teachers, for co-workers, for brothers and sisters in faith, for thoughtful listeners, and compassionate, caring friends who have ministered to us.
We exalt your name for the conversations, prayers, examples, and rebukes by which you have shaped us, encouraged us, held us back, and grown us. For all these, and many others that we do not know, for things open and hidden, for what which we have remembered and forgotten, for what was done and not done, we bless you Lord.
Who are we that you should look on us? How can we ever pay you back, Lord, for all the benefits that you have given to us? What thanks could we give you that would ever be enough to fully testify of your greatness and your grace in sparing us, bearing with us, and caring for us?
Father, you are holy, holy, holy. You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you have made all things, and for your pleasure they are and were created.
Amen
