Prayer of confession based on Daniel 9.
Lord, you are great and awesome. You are faithful to keep all of your promises. You do not fail in your devotion toward your people.
We on the other hand are often faithless. we often fail in our devotion to you. We often seek after other things, we look to other things to satisfy us. We have other gods before you we seek after and pursue the gifts that you give instead of you as the giver of the gifts. we have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly, rebelled, and turned aside from your commands.
At times, we do not listen to your Word that you have graciously given to us for our good. We lazily read our bibles or neglect them altogether. We arrogantly listen to the preaching of your Word as if we already know all things, as if these are truths for other people in other churches, but not for us.
You are right in all you do, righteousness belongs to you, O Lord, but we deserve shame, we deserve wrath, indignation, judgment from your righteous hand because we have been unfaithful. We have sinned against you.
So we plea for your compassion, we long for your forgiveness. Because that is what we need: forgiveness. We have broken your law. We have a sin debt that we cannot repay for it is infinite. So we seek your favor, we seek your grace to forgive, by your grace we turn from our iniquity and pay attention to the truth of your Word.
Through Christ your anger has been turned away from us. We seek after your gracious forgiveness not for our own sake, but for the sake of your name, for your glory. We pray that you would hear our prayer, incline your ear to listen to the voice of your unworthy slaves, not because we are worthy, but because you are compassionate. Hear Lord Jesus, forgive, for your sake because we are called by your name.
Amen.
