Prayer based on Isaiah 40.
Almighty and Everlasting God, the Supreme and uncreated Sovereign over everything, we gather as your people to lift our voices in absolute awe of your holy majesty. We praise you and worship you for you alone are God.
We ascribe greatness to you for you are completely other, wholly transcendent, and set apart from everything you have made. You are the everlasting Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, who does not faint or grow weary. Your understanding is unsearchable, stretching far beyond the limits of human understanding, lofty philosophy that benefits no one, or the so-called scientific discovery that leads us astray. We praise you and worship you.
Father, we repent and ask your forgiveness for the numerous times that we have projected our own limitations on you. In our ignorance, rebellion and sinfulness, we brought you down to our own image but thank you for the Word of God that consistently reminds us that you are incomparably Supreme. We praise you and worship you.
Who else has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand but you? Who has marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, or weighed the massive mountains on scales but you? Only you, O, Lord. We praise you and worship you.
No one has taught you knowledge, directed your Spirit, or showed you the path of understanding. You stand alone, entirely self-sufficient, needing nothing from the universe that you spoke into existence. We praise you and worship you.
We humble ourselves before your throne, recognizing our absolute frailty. To you, the mighty nations of this world are like a single drop in a bucket. They are accounted as nothing more than the small dust on the scales. You bring human princes to nothing and make the proud rulers of the earth as utter emptiness. Created beings wither when the breath of the Lord blows upon them, but your word, O God, stands sure forever. We praise you and worship you.
You sit exalted above the circle of the earth, stretching out the cosmos like a curtain, spreading them out like a tent to dwell in. We praise you and worship you.
Please forgive us for our small view - of your power and for the times we arrogantly think our ways are hidden from your sight. Please forgive us for living as though our problems are bigger than your sovereignty.
We praise you for stretching the sky and filling it with stary hosts. You created them all and call them by name. Because of your greatness, might, power and strength, not one of them will ever fall or burn out without your knowledge and approval. We praise you and worship you.
And yet, this supreme, all-powerful, and holy God—stooped down to look upon us in love, sent His only begotten Son in the flesh who used His infinite power to not crush us, but to give us life and to sustain us unto eternity. We praise you and worship you.
We praise that you give power to the faint, and you increase strength to those who have no might at all.
Please help us to wait upon the Lord every day, every hour, every minute and renew our strength.
Please grant everyone gathered here this morning the grace to run and not be weary, and to walk and not faint, by being dependent on your infinite and unchanging power.
We pray in the matchless, supreme name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, our King, Amen.
