Elder's Prayer

Please find below the notes from the Elder's Prayer this past Sunday.

The Lord in His gracious providence keeps bringing to my mind Ephesians 5:10 which says, (and) try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.

Colossians 1:10 (so as to) walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

1 Thessalonians 4:1 Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.

Based on these verses, we can conclude that, when we:

  • Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord
  • Bear fruit in every good work
  • Increase in the knowledge of God

…we please the Lord.

  • We strive to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord because our Holy God has and called us to be holy like Him. (1 Peter 1:16).
  • We strive to bear fruit in every good work, because this glorifies God - By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (John 15:9)
  • We strive to increase in the knowledge of God, because a growth stunted tree cannot bear fruit and thus cannot glorify God.

Do you discern in every situation of your life what is pleasing to the Lord and do it?

Our actions start from the Scriptural attitudes and meditations of the heart. That’s why the Psalmist prayed in Psalm 104:34 “May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord”

Could we boldly pray that prayer? That the Lord would look at the deep recessions of our hearts - thoughts and attitudes. May God help each of us there.

In a couple of weeks, many of our Church kids will start their new school year. Some of them will be going to college away from home for the first time.

I’d like to encourage our students who will be at home or away, to take one resolution this school year, that you would diligently work towards “increasing in the knowledge of God” will help you to bear fruit in every good work and thus walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. Let’s pray.

Holy of holies, the God of peace, please sanctify us completely, and may our whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We praise you because you who called us is faithful and you will surely do it. (1 Thess. 5:23-24)

Please help us to increase in the knowledge of God being strengthened with all power, according to your glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy. We thank you Father with that all we are for qualifying us to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. Thank you for delivering us from the domain of darkness and transferring us to the kingdom of your beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Col 1:11-14)

At this time, I lift up our students and their families before you. It is exciting and sometimes uneasy transition not knowing how things will turn out. But you know it so we trust you. Please help each of our students from pre-K to Masters to PHD. Please bless them with wisdom, strength and energy to raise above what is norm. and be glorified through that. Prepare the hearts and minds of the students, their families, their friends and our church for this transition in their life. Thank you for blessing Summit Woods with godly students. This is your grace and we thank you for that.

I pray for those students who have not embraces Christ yet, who have not made their parents faith as their own yet. Please help them to understand that only the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom. Please have mercy on their soul. In your Son’s name we pray, Amen.
