Significance of the Reformation

Prepare your heart for the Sermon by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together hearing God's Word.

You will find suggestions for thinking more critically through the passage, meditating more intently on the text, and prayerfully seeking wisdom to deepen your understanding of the passage to be preached this Sunday.

Carefully Think

  • This week we will be looking at the final of the five “solas” of the Reformation: soli deo Gloria (the glory of God alone). This biblical truth from the Reformation states that everything is for the glory of God alone. The passage that we will be looking at is Jude 24-25.
  • Read all 25 verses of the letter of Jude. What are the main themes that Jude is addressing in this short letter? How do those themes play into what Jude says in vv. 24-25?
  • There are essentially two parts to these two verses. There is a description of God, and what is due to God. How is God described in v. 24 through the first part of v. 25? Why would Jude focus on the preserving work of God? How does Jude focus on the preserving work of God? What is the title that Jude gives God? How is the saving nature of God described?
  • What is due to this God that Jude has described? What do the words, “glory, majesty, dominion, and authority” mean? What do they have in common? What is the extent of time that these things are to be to God? What does that say about the nature of God? How worthy is he?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • In this short epistle, Jude sternly warns against being deceived by false teachers, as well as their treachery. He charges his readers in v. 21 with the strenuous task of keeping themselves in the love of God. In light of both of these truths, v. 24 is a welcomed sight. According to this verse, what is the believers’ hope of remaining faithful amidst a world of false teachers? What is the end goal of the preserving work of God?
  • How do you think about God? Do you regularly think of him? Do you think of your life in doxological terms like the ones found in these verses? What happens when you fail to think/believe rightly about God? What happens when you believe and trust in the character of God as revealed in Scripture? How does Jude’s description of God and what he is due, compare with your normal thoughts of the Lord?
